Global DNS & HTTP Traffic Shaping
Providing a high quality content experience requires utilization of a distributed delivery network. Typically this is done by buying services from a CDN or building a highly distributed infrastructure. The internal workings of a CDN are unknown to the customer and the system operates as a black box with very limited flexibility or customized options - at best, content providers can specify a few parameters for delivery and performance. But unless they can engage the internal resources needed to manage their own distributed network, content providers are left with the single option of committing to deliver their entire demand with one CDN network. As such, they have minimal control of costs, little influence over quality, inability to dynamically allocate requests using creative rules, and difficulty integrating new resources or unequally sized resources.
The alternative to utilizing a single commercial CDN is building one from many commercial CDNs using CrowdDirector's turn-key ability to manage and monitor multiple network resources and present them in a form that looks like a single solution. Calling on rules that are configured by the provider, CrowdDirector matches content requests to the designated network resource. The content provider can continuously fine-tune its rules based on network performance data or pricing changes - to maintain a configuration that best fits the business's cost and performance objectives at all times.
